Karen is a member of Dokis First Nation (Anishinabek Nation) and a beneficiary of the Robinson-Huron Treaty 1850. Karen was appointed Associate Chair of the Ontario Parole Board, within Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario (SLASTO), in April 2017. Prior to her appointment, Karen worked in her role as Director of the Justice Sector at the Chiefs of Ontario to address justice and law-related issues impacting the 134 First Nations in Ontario. She started her career in restorative justice and also worked within Ontario’s correctional system.
Karen strongly believes in the power of respectful yet critical conversation as a vehicle to advance reconciliation. In 2016, she founded Bold Realities, a panel series aiming to promote discourse on the importance of reconciling the relationship between Indigenous communities and corporate Canada. Karen is a fellow with the Public Policy Forum, and a board member with Level Justice. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s Programme Common Law Français, where she was inducted into the Honour Society in 2014 for using her legal education as a foundation for making a significant contribution to community.
